Jordi Portell completed his PhD in Applied Physics in September 2005 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona). His thesis was focused on the payload data handling, compression and telemetry of Gaia, where he developed the only data compression system offering a ratio of 3 with GASS data. He gained experience on this while working on his Master Thesis for his degree on Electronic Engineering - as part of this he designed the telemetry formatting and data compression system for a Spanish mini-satellite.
Jordi is now a researcher at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), where he has worked on GDAAS since February 2005. He is currently working with the UB team on the new IDT, including the definition of the new telemetry model. Since he began working on Gaia in summer 2000, he has worked in collaboration with the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC) and the Meudon Observatory, where he tested his compression system on GIBIS data. He also spent three months at ESTEC during his PhD, where he developed the framework of the Gaia Telemetry CODEC. Together with Professor García-Berro, he is advising his fifth Master Thesis student and his first PhD student, all of them working on Gaia-related projects.
Jordi is also the coordinator of the SETI@home project in Catalonia, and his main interests include music, photography and computers
