The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues Multiparameter Search Tool
The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues Multiparameter Search Tool allows users to create more complex queries using a combination of (some of) the following parameters: right ascension, declination, parallax, V magnitude and B-V colour index.
This tool also allows users to query the Tycho-2 Catalogue (released in February 2000).
Access this tool here.
Documentation and useful background information for this tool is available in the Documentation section below.
The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues Search facility
This online tool allows users to extract data from the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues by querying on the object's position or by using the HIP, HD or TYC identifiers. The search tool retrieves data from the Catalogues with field descriptions plus access to light curves, Double and Multiple Systems Annex and Variability Annex (where appropriate). This tool is most appropriate for queries on individual entries or for small regions of the sky.
Access this tool here.
Documentation and useful background information for this tool is available in the Documentation section below.
Search the Hipparcos Intermediate Data Catalogue
The Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data are the one-dimensional coordinates (abscissae) on reference great circles obtained, by an independent analysis but using the same basic satellite data, by the FAST and NDAC Data Reduction Consortia. The data may be retrieved (for individual Hipparcos stars) via the Hipparcos Intermediate Data online search facility.
Access this tool here.
Search the Hipparcos Epoch Photometry Annex
Disk 2 of the Hipparcos CD-ROMs contains hip_ep.dat, the Hipparcos Epoch Photometry Annex. The data from this annex can now be called from this www site, and a light curve displayed. This facility extends the example folded light curves given on the Education page.
Access this tool here.
Access the Hipparcos Transit Data
The Hipparcos Transit Data file summarises intermediate astrometric and photometric information at the level of individual crossings of targets across the main grid of the Hipparcos instrument. The data is available for 38535 Hipparcos entries selected mainly on account of their known or suspected multiplicity, or as being parts of observations where the signal may be contaminated by the influence of another target close to the edge of the field of view.
Further information is available here.
Several animation tools have been developed to visualise the Hipparcos and Tycho data. A list of these tools and their links are maintained on the animations page.
Guides to the Catalogues
To obtain a full description of the data in the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues at least Volume 1 of SP1200 (The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues) is required. This volume is available online.
The following documents are an extract from Volume 1 giving some details of the main Hipparcos and Tycho catalogue fields: Guide to Hipparcos fields (pdf) and Guide to Tycho fields (pdf)
A user guide for the Tycho-2 Catalogue is available from the Tycho-2 web site: Guide to the Tycho-2 Catalogue (PDF format)
Miscellaneous
The README file for the multiparameter search tool contains useful background information and instructions for using this tool.
Some hints on using standard Unix tools to generate refined catalogue searches are available here in PDF format (this corresponds to Section 7 of the readme file included in the CD-ROMs).
A list of Frequently Asked Questions is maintained on this site; some of these may be useful when using this search facility.
